Patient Stories: What Eye Surgery in Prague Is Actually Like
Written testimonials are easy to produce and, for that reason, easy to distrust. The interviews below were filmed in Prague, mostly within days of surgery, with patients who agreed to sit down on camera and say what they thought. They were not paid, and nothing was scripted.
We have kept them together on one page because the useful thing is not any single account but the overlap between them: the same reasons for looking abroad, the same anxieties before booking, the same surprise at how short the operation is.
The interviews
My Honest Lens Replacement Experience
A patient from the UK who was priced out of private lens replacement at home. She researched clinics across Europe, flew to Prague once purely to inspect the facility, and returned weeks later for surgery. Filmed the morning after her second eye.

Dean had put the operation off for years and found UK prices up to triple. One day after surgery he had gone from the largest font on his phone to the smallest, and could read his car dashboard again.

Joanna came from England for near, far and middle vision. She describes a Facebook advert, a WhatsApp conversation, half an hour in and out for both eyes, and dinner out the same evening. Filmed on day three.

Sarah, a nurse, flew to Prague on her own. She talks through the planning from the UK, the hotel and the transfers, being frightened of lying there with her eyes open, and what she could see 24 hours later. Filmed the morning after surgery.

Listen to several and the same five themes recur, regardless of the procedure or where the patient travelled from.
- ✓Price was the trigger, not the destination. Nobody set out wanting to have surgery abroad. They looked at what it cost at home first.
- ✓The nerves were about the eyes, not the country. Almost everyone describes being frightened of eye surgery itself, then finding the clinic and the coordination reassuring.
- ✓They wanted to speak to a person early. The first phone call, and being allowed to ask a long list of questions without being rushed, comes up repeatedly.
- ✓The operation was far shorter than expected. Minutes per eye, anaesthetic drops rather than a needle, and no pain.
- ✓The logistics mattered more than they expected. Airport transfers and having someone at each appointment turn a foreign medical trip into a manageable one.
What a testimonial can and cannot tell you
We would rather set this out plainly than let a page of enthusiastic videos do the arguing.
A testimonial is evidence of one person’s experience. It is not evidence of a success rate, it is not a prediction of your result, and it carries an obvious selection bias: patients who are delighted are more willing to sit in front of a camera than patients who are not. Read ours, and everyone else’s, with that in mind.
What testimonials are genuinely good for is texture. How long the day takes. Whether the surgery hurt. What the clinic felt like to walk into. Whether anyone answered the phone when it mattered. Those are the questions no price list answers, and the ones patients most often say they had no way of finding out in advance.
For the parts a video cannot cover, use the numbers instead. Our guides to lens replacement costs across Europe, cataract surgery costs in the UK and intraocular lens costs set out what each procedure and lens type actually costs, and our reviews page collects verified Google reviews from patients at our partner clinic in Prague.
Frequently asked questions
Are these patients paid to appear?+
No. The patients in these interviews were not paid and were not given a script or questions in advance. They agreed to be filmed and gave consent for their interviews to be published. Their travel and treatment arrangements were the same as any other patient's.
Can I speak to a former patient before I book?+
Ask us. Some patients are willing to be contacted by people considering the same procedure, and where they have agreed to it we can put you in touch. If nobody is available for your specific procedure at the time, we will tell you that rather than improvise.
Why are most of the interviews with patients from the UK and Ireland?+
Because that is where most of the patients who travel to us come from, largely due to the gap between private prices at home and prices in Prague, and because the interviews are conducted in English. We treat patients from across Europe and North America, and the accounts on this page are not limited to any one nationality's experience.
Do these videos show the surgery itself?+
No. These are conversations with patients before and after their procedures, not clinical footage. If you want to understand what happens during the operation step by step, our procedure pages describe it, and your surgeon will take you through it in detail at your consultation.
Will I get the same result as the patients in these videos?+
There is no way to promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Results depend on your starting prescription, the health of your eyes, the lens chosen and how you heal. A consultation with your scans and prescription is the only way to get a realistic answer about your own eyes.

Note: this account describes one patient’s experience, published with her consent. She was not paid for the interview. Outcomes after eye surgery depend on your starting prescription, the lens chosen and how you heal, and they differ from person to person. Nothing on this page is medical advice or a promise of any particular result.
